We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. -Will Durant
We’re all fans of methods like “Work Smarter Not Harder” and many other practices that encourage us to assess different aspects of ourselves to create optimal output. Sometimes, we lose sight of the little things we do and how they affect our productivity and well-being. These seemingly “little” things turn into habits and tend to affect our lives more than we realize. Taking the time to recognize them and making a conscious effort to break these bad habits could increase productivity and allow you to have a better quality of work and relieve the stress that they may be causing.
Habit #1. STOP Beginning your day in a frantic frenzy.
The way you start your day generally affects the way the rest of it goes. It is common for us to rush around the house to get out of the door, barely having time to have even just a cup of coffee. It may be because you had a late night and hit the snooze button a few times too many or forgot about an appointment or something like that. Starting your day this way is hectic and can have adverse effects on your whole day and in the long run, on your well-being.
Break this habit by doing your best to get a good night’s sleep, be disciplined to get-up when your alarm goes off and prepare everything you need for the next day before you go to bed. Give yourself enough time to have a nice breakfast, and begin your day more relaxed. You will find that your day will be more productive.
Habit #2. STOP Being Disorganized.
A daily “to-do list” may seem tedious and unnecessary. However, the reality is that most successful Agents swear by some sort of task list. Haphazardly going from one activity to the next could cause you to miss out on essential steps or tasks that may cost your business.
Habit #3. STOP Procrastinating
We are all guilty of this. We see an email in our inbox and say, “I’ll deal with that later.” You see it again the next day, and the same thing happens. Pretty soon you forget altogether or are faced with a looming deadline or a frustrated person who has decided to go elsewhere to get answers or the help they needed.
Habit #4. STOP Manually completing tasks.
While there are many responsibilities in your business that can only be done manually, there are many others that Real Estate Entrepreneurs do not realize can be automated. Either that or they feel it is tedious to set-up. Instead of taking the time to set-up a system that will make things quicker and easier in the long run, we decide to stick to manually completing these tasks costing us a lot of time.
Habit #5. STOP Multitasking (too much).
Real estate agents are always on the go and have a thousand things to do at any given time. Studies at the University of Michigan showed that a 3-second distraction can lead you to double the mistakes in your work. So when you’re bouncing around between several things as a multitasker, you’re more likely to make more errors.
Habit #6 STOP Wearing ALL the hats.
When you are starting out as a Real Estate Agent, it is common for you to do everything in your business. However, as your business grows, doing this successfully gets more and more complicated, and if you WANT to grow, this juggling act makes it nearly impossible.
Breaking bad habits can be difficult, but with awareness and determination, they are not impossible to break. Having a great support system to help you soldier on and achieve your goals is also a giant plus.
